Air Purifier FAQ's

WHAT ARE HONEYWELL AIR PURIFIERS’ VIRUS REDUCING CAPABILITIES?

Some Honeywell HEPA and Air Genius air purifiers have been 3rd party tested and found to be effective at reducing certain virus and bacteria from the air that passes through the filters. Virus reduction claims vary by model and are marked on each package and on HoneywellPluggedIn.com. We have not tested product effectiveness for the COVID-19 virus and therefore do not claim that the product is effective at COVID-19 virus reduction.

WHY IS MY FAN RUNNING LOUD?

If it is the first time you are using your air purifier, ensure that you have removed the protective plastic wrap from the filters.

If you’ve previously used your air purifier, the unit may be running loud if it is time to replace the filters as high amounts of contaminants can block the pores in the filter and stop the air from moving through it. Ensure that you check your filters and replace them according to the recommended time frames specified in the owner’s manual or when the filter change indicator lights up.

Also check to make sure nothing else is blocking the grilles either in or out of the device. Nothing should be resting on top of the outflow, and nothing should block the intake grille.

Lastly, if the device is on Turbo or Auto mode, it may run the air purifier at a higher fan speed which is louder.

THE TOUCH PANEL IS UNRESPONSIVE.

First, make sure the unit is plugged in and getting power from an outlet.

Make sure you are touching a functional button and not an indicator light. Sometimes these lights are labeled to tell you what mode the unit is in, but are not intended to be pushed.

On some models, if the grille is not reinstalled properly, the unit will not operate.

If after trying the above, the touch panel still does not work as expected, call our Consumer Relations team at 1-800-477-0457 or email us at [email protected]

WHICH FILTER FITS MY UNIT?

1. On your air purifier: remove the grille of the air purifier to find the stickers indicating the replacement filters needed.

2. On our website: Find the product page for your model on our website . Filter compatibility will appear under “View All Specifications” section on the bottom of the product page. HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO CHANGE THE FILTER?

Most Honeywell Air Purifiers have a “Filter Check/Reset” indicator that alerts you when it is time to change the filter. As a general rule:

  • Pre-filters should be replaced every 3 months.

  • HEPA filters should be changed every 12 months.

  • HEPA Clean filters (depending on the model) should be replaced either every 4 to 6 months. Please refer to the product owner’s manual for recommended replacement time frames.

Note: These replacement intervals are intended as guidelines only. Performance of any filter media is dependent upon the concentration of contaminants going through the system. High concentrations of contaminants such as dust, pet dander, and smoke will reduce the useful performance of the filters.

Note, the main filters on Air Genius or Quiet Clean Air Purifiers are permanent and do not need to be replaced but should be washed every 3 months according to the instructions in the owner’s manual.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY AIR FILTER?

Changing the filter on your air purifier is easy but may vary depending upon the model you own.

Refer to your owner’s manual for detailed instructions on changing the air filter for your specific model.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HEPA OR AN IFD FILTER?

HEPA and ifD filters use different technology to filter out particles.

  • HEPA: Is considered the “gold standard” for mechanical air purification. These units use mechanical filtration by where particles are forced through and trapped in a HEPA filter that is certified to capture up to 99.97% of microscopic allergens as small as 0.3 microns in size. The pre-filters and HEPA filters are replaceable.

  • ifD: Uses electronic filtration in which particles are attracted to and captured by the permanent ifD filters. ifD units can capture 99% or 99.9% of particles either 0.2 or 0.3 microns in size and larger depending on the specific model. The main filter is permanent and washable, but some units also work with a pre-filter to capture larger particles and reduce VOC and odors.

More details about the differences between the technologies can be found here: how-do-technologies-differ

HOW DO I RESET THE FILTER LIGHT?

Refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to reset the filter light on your model. You can find owner’s

manuals here:air-purifiers-shop

DOES MY AIR PURIFIER COME WITH A FILTER?

Yes, all of our air purifiers come with initial filter(s) already in the unit.

WHY ARE THERE 2 FILTERS IN MY AIR PURIFIER? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

Most Honeywell Air Purifiers come with both a pre-filter and a primary filter.

  • The pre-filter helps capture larger particles like pet hair and dust and reduce odors and VOC’s
  • The primary filter in your unit will typically be a HEPA, HEPAClean or ifD filter that captures the smaller microscopic particles.

CAN I USE ANY REPLACEMENT FILTER FOR MY AIR PURIFIER?

Honeywell takes pride in ensuring effective air cleaning performance. To ensure stated product performance and effectiveness, use only genuine and Certified Honeywell replacement filters. Each air purifier is designed to work with the specified filters. Unit performance is tested as a system with Honeywell filters for best efficiency. We cannot promise the stated performance of your air purifier if non-Honeywell filters are used.

You can find certified Honeywell Filters here: filters-and-accessories

CAN I CLEAN MY PERMANENT AIR FILTER?

Only Honeywell Air Genius and Quiet Clean Air Purifier models have permanent filters that are washable. Refer to your Owner’s Manual for detailed instructions on washing the permanent filter.

HOW DO I CLEAN THE FAN?

The fan on the air purifier should not be cleaned. Note that the product warranty is void if the unit is taken apart.

HOW DO I SETUP/INSTALL MY AIR PURIFIER?

For product setup instructions, refer to the owner’s manual that comes with the air purifier. You can also access online versions of the manuals

WHICH AIR PURIFIER IS RIGHT FOR MY ROOM SIZE OR SQUARE FOOTAGE?

To find air purifier for a given room size, we recommend visiting our site and filtering by room size: air-purifiers-shop

WHERE CAN I FIND PRODUCT DIMENSIONS?

Product dimensions are available in the “View All Specifications” section on the bottom of each product page.

WHY DOES MY AIR QUALITY SENSOR/INDICATOR CHANGE COLOR?

Air purifiers that feature air quality sensors/indicators, are continuously monitoring the air. The color of the indicator changes to indicate the air quality in the room:

  • Red = generally indicates poor air quality levels
  • Amber = indicates moderate air quality levels
  • Green/Blue = generally considered good air quality levels

Refer to your owner’s manual for detailed information about the air sensor for your specific model.

WHY DID MY FAN SPEED CHANGE SUDDENLY?

If the cleaning level automatically changes on your unit without you manually changing any settings, your unit may be set to Auto-mode. When the unit is in Auto mode, it will adjust to the ideal cleaning level based on the indoor air quality detected.

WHERE SHOULD I PLACE MY AIR PURIFIER?

Place your air purifier in the room (or rooms) you use the most. Select a firm, level and flat surface, in an area that is not blocked by furniture or other obstructions that prevent air from circulating through.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FAN SPEED VS THE SETTINGS?

Fan speed is typically related to the different modes or settings that enable you to control the air purifier. Cleaning levels are part of the settings.

The cleaning levels are optimized to capture specific particle sizes. For example, germ particles are smaller and are more effectively captured in the filter at lower fan speeds. Sleep settings also run the fan at lower speeds to keep noise levels to a minimum. Allergens are larger particles and fan speeds are higher on this setting to remove allergens from the air more quickly on this setting.
